Keyboard test

Press every key. Keys that work turn green.

How the keyboard test works

Press each key in turn. A key that works turns green and stays green; while you hold it down it turns blue, so you can see exactly which keys the computer registers. The counter shows how many of the 85 keys on the drawing you have tested. Below the drawing the page shows the last key's name, its code, its keyCode and its location, which tells the left Shift from the right one and the numeric keypad from the main keys. In Chrome and Edge the letters on the drawing follow your keyboard layout, for example QWERTZ or AZERTY. Reset clears the results.

What to look for

Keys the test cannot see

The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard and never reaches the computer as a key of its own. Some keys and shortcuts are taken by the system or the browser before the page sees them, for example Alt + Tab or Print Screen. Shortcuts with Ctrl keep working as usual, so Ctrl + R reloads the page. The numeric keypad is not drawn, but its keys still show their name, code and the location "numeric keypad".

Checking a new or used keyboard

When you buy a used laptop or keyboard, go through every row from left to right, then the modifier keys on both sides (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) and the arrows; the location line tells the left and right keys apart. For games, hold the keys you press together, for example W, A and Shift with Space, and check that all of them turn blue. If you play with a controller, check it on the gamepad tester.

Questions

Does the test work with laptop keyboards?

Yes. Keys that a laptop does not have, such as the right Windows key, simply stay grey.

Why does a key show a different letter?

The drawing follows the keyboard layout selected in your system. If it does not match the letters printed on your keys, change the layout in your system's language settings.

Can I test the numeric keypad?

Yes, partly. The keypad is not drawn, but each keypad key shows its name, code and the location numeric keypad below the drawing. Turn Num Lock on to test the digits.

Why doesn't the Fn key light up?

Fn is handled by the keyboard itself and sends no signal of its own. Test it together with the keys it changes, for example the volume or brightness keys.

How do I check how many keys my keyboard registers at once?

Hold keys down one after another without releasing them and watch how many stay blue. When a newly pressed key no longer turns blue, the keyboard has reached its limit for that combination.

Why does a key work here but not in a game?

If the key turns green here, the keyboard is fine. Check the key binding in the game's settings and whether another program, such as a keyboard utility or a macro tool, takes the key over.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The page shows only the last key you pressed and forgets everything when you close the tab.
